rachel welford
new works in architectural glass
february 13th - may 15th
rachel’s newest works are subtle and delicate layered glass panels that explore and play with light.
the panels are constructed from layers of window glass and mirror, each separated by a few millimetres. partial sandblasting on both the front and back of each layer creates a mix of reflective and matt surfaces where light bounces quickly and sharply from the mirrored or shiny areas, and becomes diffused, soft and slow as it falls on sandblasted matt ones. printed black enamel adds another dimension, providing contrast to the muted tones of the sandblasting.
suitable for wall based display or for installation in an architectural context, these works thrive on intangible or transitory conditions. variations in natural or artificial lighting, and the changing position or movement of the viewer enable the panels to be many different pieces of work at once, and create a dialogue and interaction between the work, its site, and the viewer.
the glass plus the intriguing projections, reflections and shadows that all form the work invite investigation of just what is going on! The perception of space through light, especially where a sense of space is disrupted, ambiguous or not as expected, is the key concern within this work.
rachel has created two glass & mirror window panels as part of her exhibition which are specific to the location. they’re based on the view from inside the gallery and reflections in the windows from outside and can be viewed from both inside and outside the gallery. our gallery overlooks scarborough’s south bay and spa footbridge and they’re the images you can see in the design.
